Famagusta, Northern Cyprus Travel Guide

If you are a lover of history then Famagusta is the ideal destination for you. The town is awash with ancient sites, cathedrals, churches and palaces. Attractions here include St Barnabas Monastery, Othello Castle, Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, the Sea Gate and Kertikli Baths. The walled old town consists of old streets steeped in history and attractive squares where you will find cafes and family-run tavernas serving traditional Turkish and Cypriot cuisine. Visit the Royal Palace, St Nicholas Cathedral, the Twin Churches and the original gates of the city wall. In the modern part of the city you will find a busy commercial centre and a university.

Just outside of Famagusta is one of the worlds most important archaeological sites, Salamis. The well preserved Roman ruins here include the ancient amphitheatre which is still used for music events, the forum and the Roman baths. Along the whole length of the site runs a beautiful sandy beach where the crystal-clear waters are perfect for scuba diving and snorkelling.

Nature-lovers will love the Karpas Peninsula which stretches to the northernmost tip of the island of Cyprus. The peninsula is a wild and remote area with pine and cypress forests and is home to a vast range of endemic species of flora and fauna. Along the deserted stretch of coastline there are unspoilt beaches and traditional fishing villages waiting to be explored.

Just along the coast from Famagusta is the quaint harbour town of Kyrenia and inland is the hillside village of Bellapais with its interesting ruined abbey. Other places to visit are the former beach resort of Varosia, which has remained behind barbed wire fencing since the Turkish invasion in 1974, the ancient ruins at Enkomi and Nicosia.

The Famagusta area has some great beaches offering sunbathers peace and tranquility. These unspoilt golden beaches include Bediz, Glapsides, Nangomi, Silver Beach and Bafra.

Popular activities in the area include water sports, walking and hiking, horse riding and mountain biking.

Holiday accommodation is available in Famagusta Old Town and on Famagusta Bay. Late deals for the beach hotels on the bay are great for cheap family holidays to Cyprus. If you are looking for something more up-market, the more luxurious hotels are found along the coast and in the surrounding countryside.

The Famagusta beach holiday season starts in April and continues right through till the autumn. April and May enjoy around 6 hours of sunshine a day with temperatures in the 20′s. June till September enjoys 10 hours of sunshine a day with temperatures in the 30′s. The sea is very warm during July and August and is even warm enough for swimming in November! Spring is a great time to book cheap holiday packages to Famagusta.

Cyprus Property For Sale in Protaras is Outstanding

Cyprus property for sale in Protaras provides all aspects of the property spectrum from Cyprus apartments in Protaras, in the middle of the throbbing nightlife to dream luxury villas overlooking miles and miles of pristine coastline. A Cyprus map of Protaras shows that it is on the East of the island situated just above Agia Napa and below the ghost town of Famagusta in the occupied North Cyprus.

Many people only know of the tourist district of the region, but it also has important agricultural terrain known locally as the ‘red soil’ area, which is mainly flat and is where the famous Cyprus potatoes and many other vegetables are grown. A Cyprus map of Protaras will show the main attraction for Cyprus property for sale along the 10 miles of beautiful coastline is Fig Tree Bay which is very popular with families who can enjoy the sparkling turquoise waters which are clean and safe for swimming. There is an amazing selection of water sports available, including jet skiing, water skiing, snorkeling, diving and many others.

Cyprus property for sale can be a great investment for those looking for a holiday home and rental income, but you must be aware that the main season is fairly short from May to September and almost the whole area shuts down from the end of October to April and therefore if you are thinking of a Cyprus apartment in Protaras you must take this into account when doing your calculations. Even the McDonalds in the town is closed in winter – honestly!! For some this is the charm of the area that you have the mad season when the place is full of life and then contrast this to the winter months when you have the place to yourself!

Cyprus apartments in Protaras and Cyprus property for sale in general still offer overseas investors attractive opportunities, the market is booming and the prices of land are still increasing. The climate of course is a major factor to those who come to live and visit the island. There are still proper seasons here which may come as a surprise to someone who has only visited in the summer, spring has beautiful flowers in the hedgerows, blossom on the trees and green rolling hills, which gradually fade into the summer landscape of sunburnt and brown fields which in the autumn need the merest hint of moisture and they are green again and then the winters are mild compared to northern Europe, but there is nearly always snow in the Troodos and believe it or not skiing!

The Cyprus map of Protaras shows how close the town is to the main clubbing centre of Agia Napa, and many people like to use Cyprus apartments in Protaras as their base so they can get into the town easily at night, but have a slightly more restful stay at other times. Cyprus property for sale in the area is great value for money and is still slightly better value than the West of the Island, but this is equalising month by month so now may be the time to get your feet wet in the Cyprus property for sale market!

Kate Deas-Smith is involved in the Cyprus property for sale market. Here Kate outlines the appeal of Cyprus apartments in Protaras.

Cyprus Property For Sale With a Cyprus Map of Protaras

Whilst you are browsing around the internet have look at Cyprus property for sale and search for self catering Cyprus apartments. Cyprus property for sale is great value so why not take a good look ,you may well be surprised at what you find. Take a look at a Cyprus map, Protaras is a wonderful place to invest in Cyprus property for sale.

A Cyprus map of Protaras will show you that it is located on the Eastern side of the Island, quite close to the clubland of Ayia Napa. It is a short drive to Ayia Napa and you will find that there are many tourists who want to rent a self catering Cyprus apartment during the long summer months, and they are willing to pay for a place that is not actually located in the centre of this club scene. So by investing in your very own self catering apartment in this area you could reap a nice little income from the rental of your property. A Cyprus map of Protaras will show you just how far it is from the party hot spots.

Self catering in Cyprus and apartments are becoming increasingly popular for families so they are not tied to a hotels schedule and can have their own routine. Food on the Island is delicious, so why book into a hotel when you can go self catering and eat out at one of the many tavernas each night. Prices are inexpensive and the variety is vast. The food is freshly cooked and more often than not you will find that your salad and fresh vegetables have been picked the same day. Now that’s fresh.

A Cyprus map of Protaras will also show you that it is only a short drive from Larnaca airport which means that you can start your holiday shortly after you land, no long haul from the airport to your destination. You could be on the beach within an hour of leaving the airport. Flights from UK to Cyprus are inexpensive so there is no worry about the amount of times you can afford to visit your property. Investment in is a sure thing as prices are starting to rise so you could reap substantial rewards in the next few years.

Fantastic value Cyprus property for sale can be found all over the Island and is equally as good an investment no matter where you eventually decide on. Property investment can only be a good thing with the prices set to rise just as the economists have predicted.

Car hire is cheap on the Island so you will not have to confine your visit to just the Protaras area, you can travel all over and witness some of the spectacular views for yourself, just look at your Cyprus map, Protaras is not too far from anywhere as the Island is so small.

Investing in Cyprus is a great thing to do. With the prices about set to rise you could lose out if you leave it too much longer. Why not book a flight to Cyprus and come and take a look for yourself? You will be pleased when you see the excellent value of self catering Cyprus apartments.

Tony W Smith is involved in the Cyprus property for sale market. Tony says self catering Cyprus apartments are a great investment.

Cyprus Island – Cyprus Travel Guide

Discover the island of Cyprus – Known by many as Aphrodite`s Island, Cyprus is the spot where the goddess of love is said to have risen from the sea. The island is packed with UNESCO-listed heritage sites, sandy beaches and diverse landscape, making it an ideal holiday destination for those looking for variety. Cyprus is located in the eastern Mediterranean to the south of Turkey and west of Lebanon. The Republic of Cyprus, as the island is officially known, is partitioned into two main sections with the northern area under Turkish control. Cyprus exhibits great diversity of landscape for a country of its size, with rocky coastline interspersed with large, sandy bays. Further inland the country has large swathes of mountainous landscape full of rugged and pine-covered peaks.

In the centre of the country, the Troodos Mountains rise to over six thousand feet and in the winter this area becomes a popular ski resort. The rest of the country is lush and hilly and provides fertile conditions for the islands many food crops, such as olives and grapes.

Apart from the excellent year-round weather and fine landscapes, one of Cyprus`s main draw cards when it comes to attracting visitors is the sheer scale and variety of culture on offer. This is perhaps not surprising for a country whose history stretches back around ten thousand years. The capital, Nicosia, makes a good base from which to explore the island`s fascinating history, with some of the best excursions from here including the Royal Tombs at Tamassos and the Machairas Monastery in the hills to the south. The city itself is an interesting place to visit. It is currently divided by the `Green Line` which separates the Government-controlled south of the island from the Turkish-controlled north. Cultural highlights within Nicosia include the Cyprus Museum, St John`s Cathedral and the charming Folk Art Museum.

Limassol, the island`s second largest city, is another cultural gem and well worth spending at least a day or two. The city is the island`s main port and the centre of Cyprus`s wine production. If your visit coincides with Limassol`s annual wine festival in September do try to pay a visit and enjoy the festivities. A trip to Limassol should also be combined with a visit to Kourion, probably the most spectacularly situated of all Cyprus`s ancient sites. Kourion is now a collection of ancient ruins, including a spectacular amphitheatre and interesting archaeological dig sites.

The best beaches are found in the areas around Ayia Napa and Protaras and here you will discover idyllic coastline where delightfully warm, clear water laps gently at the sand. Water sports enthusiasts also tend to gravitate towards these areas due to the wide variety of activities on offer. Staying in one of the main beach areas is a great idea for those that want to relax and soak up the sun. It is easy to rent a car in Ayia Napa and Protaras so visitors can still explore the diversity of this beautiful country while enjoying a relaxing beach break.

Cyprus is served by two international airports, situated at Larnaca in the southeast of the island and Paphos in the west. Flights from the UK typically take around four to five hours and direct flights are available from several UK airports, including Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester. Tourism is big business in Cyprus so visitors can look forward to a wide range of accommodation options to choose from. All the major cities and beachside resorts contain a good mixture of self-catering apartments, mid-range guest houses and luxury hotels so just search online for something to suit your budget. So whether you are looking for a cultural break in Limassol or a cheap holiday in Protaras, the island of Cyprus is sure to provide a memorable and enjoyable experience for you and your family.

Omodhos in Southern Cyprus Travel Guide

Omodhos is a beautiful romantic Cypriot mountain village which is located close to some of the Mediterranean’s best beaches. Sitting on the scenic southern slops of the Troodos Mountains, Omodhos is just 20 minutes from the beautiful beach at Kurium Bay and within easy reach of the beach resorts of Limassol and Paphos. Although temperatures do drop in January and February, Omodhos is a great choice for your winter sun holidays with an average 5 hours of sunshine a day and temperatures which will feel mild compared to those in the UK. The village attracts couples and visitors looking for good quality accommodation at budget prices for their family holidays to Cyprus. Omodhos offers a combination of tradition village life with beach relaxation on the Cyprus coast. The quiet Pissouri Bay is a beautiful clean beach with a variety of water sports on offer and is very popular with families.

The village itself has picturesque narrow streets lined with traditional whitewashed houses, a cobbled village square, cafes, traditional tavernas serving regional cuisine and local wines, old traditional shops selling lace and jewellery and a monastery.

Omodhos is the heart and soul of the Cyprus wine industry, producing high quality local wine. Every August the village hosts a wine festival with exhibitions and events to keep the locals and visitors entertained and also giving people the opportunity to learn about the local wines and culture of Omodhos. If you are lucky enough to visit at this time make sure you see a linos (traditional wine press) and visit the local wineries for tastings, not forgetting to sample the locally produced spirit Zivania.

Walking and hiking are popular pursuits in Omodhos. The village is the oldest of a group of quaint villages in the area, well known for their vineyards and fruit orchards. Wander along the mountain roads which take you from village to village and past some amazing Byzantine churches. Villages like Palaichori and Platanistassa offer charming traditional cafes and amazing landscape of fruit orchards, vineyards and mountain streams. Not only do the Troodos Mountains offer wonderful villages to explore but they are also home to some very interesting monasteries like Trooditissa and Ayios Ioannis. The Troodos Mountains are designated as a National Forest Park and feature a variety of flora and fauna with oak, maple and pine forests which can be explored by foot or bicycle along the many trails which meander through the mountainside. Watch out for the unusual mouflon (wild sheep) which roam freely in the mountains.

A holiday in Omodhos is not complete without a visit to the coastal town of Paphos. In ancient times Old Paphos was the most important place for worshipping Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty and love. Named a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, Paphos is home to the remains of the Roman governor’s palace which houses some amazing mosaic works. Paphos has a great atmosphere both during the day at the beaches and at night when the nightclubs come to life.

Visit Omodhos in the early or late season, especially in the spring when the mountain side is covered with wild flowers and travel deals to Cyprus are plentiful.
